Tips for Keeping Your Promotional Staff Team Cool in the Summer
The UK is famous for many things with the unpredictable nature of our weather being one of them. However, in recent years we have seen a significant shift in the kind of weather we have in the UK. At one time, glorious summer sunshine was in no way guaranteed but now, with global warming and the climate crisis, we have been told to expect more periods of long, hot weather.
Our winter weather is just as unpredictable but it would be that in winters to come, we could see very cold snaps hit the country.
Our promotional staff, including marshals and stewards, are used to working outside but that doesn’t mean that when you hire our staff, you shouldn’t take steps to assure their comfort, whether it is in the high 20s or registering a minus temperature.
#1 Make sure drinking water is provided
As a minimum, drinking water would be expected for all staff who work outside as part of their work. Our staff will often carry their own water but there is only so much they can carry with them! They’ll also appreciate plenty of opportunities to take a refreshing drink and visit the bathroom too.
Sipping water every 20 minutes or so is better than gulping down large quantities of water. Make sure staff have access to do this.
#2 Shade
Standing in the hot sun, or even sitting or walking around it, will take its toll. No matter how ‘easy’ or simple the task, working in high heat and humidity is very draining. Makes sure promotional staff have respite from the sun with shade or supply them with hats if they are working for long periods in the sun.
#3 Breaks
All our staff, like employed staff, are entitled to take breaks from work. In fact, it’s near on impossible for promotional staff to maintain their energy levels without them. We encourage our staff to make sure they take their breaks including time away from the stand for lunch. After all, you want promotional staff who have the energy levels needed to make an impact for your brand.
Offering a quiet area for promo staff to sit and enjoy their lunch or take a break from the crowds is always welcome.
#4 Treat them!
It’s really important that you treat your hired team of promotional staff just like you are employing them (effectively you are!). They are highly skilled, experienced people who can really make a big difference to your brand. As well as looking after them with water and shady areas, an ice-cold drink or ice cream at some point in the day wouldn’t go amiss…
#5 Change your plans
If your plan was for the promo team to dress in costumes for the day, you may need to change these plans. It doesn’t mean that your original plan can’t happen but what it does mean is that in very hot weather, plans need to be adapted. In the case of costumes or performance, instead of day-long performance, performing in short bursts makes far more sense (and is much safer for your promotional team).
Our promotional staff are well versed in working outside and so will come prepared with water, suntan lotion, hats and so on. But you need to be aware too of how excessive summer heat can affect your event and plans – and your promotional staff team too.
