No Santa Shortage Here!
Christmas is coming and an army of Santa’s is beginning to appear at attractions and shopping centres nationwide. Children are starting to create their Christmas lists, and looking forward to meeting him again.
But some newspapers have reported that there is a distinct possibility that these festive grottos might just be missing one very important ingredient – Santa himself.
Forget about talk of shortages of toys and food, and Heathrow struggling to cope with the mass of cargo flights being brought in by retailers, there is said to be a bigger problem. According to the stories in the national press, there is actually a shortage of Santa’s. The Sun describe it as ‘another devastating supply crisis’ making a traditional Christmas hard to achieve. Not enough Santa’s are coming forward to take up their roles this Christmas, leaving retailers, shopping centre bosses and other attractions struggling to fill the vacancies. There have been suggestions that some potential Santa’s are reluctant to take on jobs where they might be at risk of catching Covid or are simply taking full time jobs rather than part time or seasonal ones.
And it is not just in the UK. Similar stories are emerging in newspapers elsewhere, especially in Australia and the United States from small town newspapers to big names like the Wall St Journal. One US Santa agency suggested that there are currently over 3,000 unfilled Santa vacancies worldwide. Another agency indicated that there are 15% fewer people willing to take on the role of Santa. Some US charities have been reporting that even volunteers are reluctant to fill available roles at charity events.
It leaves us a little puzzled – because we certainly don’t have any shortage of Santa’s. We have Santa’s and their helpers available in every corner of the UK, ready and waiting to take up more bookings, and make this Christmas memorable for children of all ages. Their sacks are filled with presents, their Ho Ho Ho’s as loud and cheery as ever. Their red coats and hats are neatly brushed, totally spick and span and all their helpers are busy sorting out toys, grooming reindeer (especially Rudolph) and making sure the sleigh is in tip top condition.
Yes, demand is high, as it always is at this time of year. We are getting lots of bookings for Santa to visit grottos as well as making personal visits to families nationwide. It is keeping our Santa’s and his helpers extremely happy and busy, but they say that they do have still have time to do more visits.
