Keep Cool and Safe when Working Outside
Getting outside in the sunshine is a lovely way to spend a summer’s day even more so if it part of your job! But it also has its risks and being aware of those potential problems is important for your health.
Here are some top tips for staying cool, safe and healthy throughout the summer.
Stay hydrated
It’s very important to make sure you drink as much as possible. Try to avoid drinks that that are dehydrating such as coffee, fizzy drinks and tea. Instead aim for water, herb or fruit juice. Ideally you need at least 8 glasses of water every day. If you get dehydrated, it will make you ill and dizzy.
Use sunscreen
Sunburn is very painful, leading to red, inflamed skin which might even blister. Use a high level sunscreen and reapply it at least every couple of hours. If your skin is getting too hot, go into the shade if possible or wear a loose fitting blouse or shirt.
Dress comfortably
Avoid tight clothing, it will only make you feel hotter. Light colours are cooler than dark ones. Clothes made from natural fibres will generally be cooler than man made fabrics. Try and keep arms and legs covered during the hottest parts of the day. A hat with a brim will ensure the sun’s rays are kept away from your face.
Protect your eyes
Bright sunlight can damage your eyes. Wearing sunglasses will provide some protection.
Change your working location. Move to a shadier spot or ask the client to provide a gazebo or covered area to provide some protection. If there is a tree nearby, stand underneath as the dappled shade will help disperse the heat.
Don’t eat too much. Keep your meals small and light. Make sure you include lots of fruit as this will help keep hydrated as well as providing fibre and nutrients.
Keep a spritzer or damp cloth in your bag and use at intervals throughout the day. Even running cold water over your wrists will help reduce your body heat as will dribbling some across the back of your neck.
