What are influencers?
We assume that the only people who can ‘influence’ others to buy a product are those with millions of followers and celebrity status. With an astronomical payment rate per post, for many brands, this is simply out of reach.
Working with influencers with a smaller following is just as effective, if not more so. On Instagram, for example, research shows that the optimum engagement rate for influencer marketing – followers liking and commenting on posts – peaks with an influencer who has around 1,000 followers.
Engagement rates remain buoyant until we reach ‘celebrity-status’. Even though their captions and posts are seen by tens of thousands of people across the globe, the engagement rate falls away. They are then seen as less authentic and their credibility can suffer when they are promoting.
