One day of Royal Ascot has been known as ladies day for well over 100 years. In a way, the whole of Royal Ascot is all about the number 1 lady, who after all only lives just up the road at Windsor.

So, what is so special about lady’s day at Ascot?

Anyone can go (dressed up of course) and have amazing fun, regardless of whether you’re drowning in Dolce or top to toe in Topshop. Ladies Day is for every Lady.

For us modern girls you don’t need to go all Audrey Hepburn – but skinny jeans and crop-tops are not going to get you into the grandstands.

In the past, Ladies Day was primarily associated with complimentary or discounted tickets for women. Before you go shopping, best to check the rules. “Ladies are kindly reminded that formal daywear is a requirement in the Royal Enclosure…” “dresses and skirts should be of modest length…” “pashminas may be worn…” “jumpsuits are welcome…if they are of full-length to the ankle..” And before you splash out, bear in mind that “strapless, off the shoulder, halter neck and spaghetti straps are not permitted; midriffs must be covered…and fascinators are not permitted”.
